Ansonia beats Rocky Hill for return trip to Class S final

WALLINGFORD Ansonia figured it'd have a test Saturday from Rocky Hill in the Class S football semifinals. The Terriers' big running game could have given the top ranked Chargers a challenge.

Ansonia used big plays to contain the Terriers and roll on to its 27th state final, beating Rocky Hill 49 27 at Sheehan, its 42nd win in a row.

"The defense makes a lot of huge plays," Chargers coach Tom Brockett said. "They're underrated at times."

Rocky Hill fumbled near midfield late in the first quarter, allowing the Chargers (14 0) to turn around and make it 20 7 early in the second.

The second seeded Chargers will play fourth seeded Woodland (12 2) red bottom shoes in the state final Friday night at 7 at Central Connecticut. Ansonia beat the Hawks 48 7 on Nov. 20 in the NVL championship game and is seeking its 19th state title, and its third in a row.

"It feels great," senior running back Arkeel Newsome said. "We've worked for this. We definitely deserve it."

Newsome ran 36 times for 265 yards and five touchdowns, leaving him 148 yards short of the state single season rushing record of 3,763 that he set as a sophomore. He had run for over 400 yards two games in a row and has a state record 10,420 career yards.

After Tajik Bagley took the opening kickoff back to the Rocky Hill 43, Newsome needed seven carries to gain all 43 yards on the opening series. But Rocky Michael Kors Outlet Hill answered with an eight play drive, capped by standout senior Chris Young's 29 yard touchdown run.

Newsome took the next play from scrimmage 64 yards, and Ansonia led for good. He also forced a fumble two Terriers' series later.

"We've got him one more game," Brockett said. "What a remarkable, cheap red bottoms remarkable career. He's Michael Kors Cheap a class act, humble as can be. He proves himself again every week."

Newsome didn't win the Gatorade state Player of the Year award this week; that went to Middletown's Dario Highsmith.

"We can't worry about that," Brockett said. "Congratulations to the kid who won. Arkeel's got plenty of awards. He's in it for the team."

Newsome ran a lot cheap red bottom shoes out of the Wildcat again Saturday, but junior quarterback Jai'quan McKnight returned from a Thanksgiving ankle injury to complete three big passes.

One was a 32 yard strike to Witold Gul, setting up Newsome's third touchdown. The other two were touchdown passes, one lofted to Gul over a defensive back, the other to Thomas Majchrzak.

"I'm hopeful he'll be 100 percent next week," Brockett said.

Rocky Hill received the second half kickoff Cheap Michael Kors Outlet and scored eight plays later; recovering an onside kick, it needed three plays to score, Andrew Jenkelunas' first of two TD tosses to Thomas Seaver, cutting Ansonia's lead to 34 21.
