One slip wrecked Rams' trick play

The execution wasn't. In a Rams season of several near misses, add Sunday's botched fake punt in San Francisco to the list.

Coaches often say it takes only one glitch among 11 players to mess up a play, and that was the case early in the fourth quarter at Candlestick Park. In this case, linebacker Ray Ray Armstrong normally one of the team's best special teams players didn't get enough of a block on San Francisco's Anthony Dixon on the left edge of the Rams' punt formation unit.

"We were really close to a really big play," coach Jeff Fisher said. "They got penetration on the left side. The design of the play was for 'Gio' (Matt Giordano) to take the snap and run and just kind of flip it back to 'Sted' (Stedman Bailey) coming back on the reverse."

Armstrong was lined up two players down from long snapper Jake McQuaide. Mike McNeill was lined up immediately to Armstrong's left, but as soon as McQuaide snapped the ball to up back Giordano, McNeill started running to his right to serve as part of the blocking convoy for Bailey.

Bailey, who frequently lines up as an outside gunner on the Rams' punt coverage unit, was lined up in the slot this time, several yards to the left of McNeill at the start of the play. It's not Bobby Wagner Super Bowl Jersey an unusual spot for Bailey; he lined up there on the Rams' http://www.seahawksauthenticofficialshop.com/RUSSELL_WILSON_SUPER_BOWL_JERSEY.html first punt against Chicago a week earlier.

But when Dixon, a running back by trade, squirted through, he was temporarily between Giordano and Bailey. The result was a 5 yard loss. San Francisco scored a victory clinching touchdown on the next play in a 23 13 triumph.

"All the angles were there, all the blocks were there," Fisher said. "(Dixon) got penetration and Matt he was afraid of the turnover when he saw the color (of the 49ers' jerseys). Had he been able to just hand it off to him, it probably would have worked out well."

Dixon was between Giordano and Bailey only for an instant, eventually drifting to his left as Bailey ran by headed in the opposite direction. There was a moment, as Fisher mentioned, where it looked like Giordano simply could've handed off to Bailey. But the moment passed, Giordano kept the ball, and he was quickly engulfed by several 49ers.

"If you get a chance to look at it (on tape), it was there. He was running a long way," Fisher said.

A look at game film confirmed that sentiment. Had Bailey gotten the ball in his hands at the St. Louis 15, he would've had lots of running room on the right perimeter. Spillman; McNeill blocked Corey Lemonier; and Eugene Sims was on Kassim Osgood.

Former Ram Craig Dahl was unblocked on that side but would've had to navigate through several players to get to the edge. He probably doesn't get there in time to tackle Bailey. If Bailey gets the ball, that is.

Special teams trickery has long been part Richard Sherman Super Bowl Jersey of Fisher's coaching toolbox. For example, from 1995 2005 with the Houston Oilers Tennessee Titans, Fisher's punters threw 16 passes. Fifteen of those tosses were by Craig Hentrich (Alton Marquette High), and he completed seven for 91 yards.

It was all roses on that front last season, with Hekker completing three of three passes for 42 yards, including a touchdown pass on a fake field goal to Danny Amendola in Game 4 against Seattle. (Hekker is the holder for field goals and extra points.)

As such, Hekker had the distinction of throwing for more yards in 2012 than Tim Tebow did with the New York Jets 42 to 39.

The other two Hekker completions came on fake punts at San Francisco. The first came on a fourth and 4 play from the St. Louis 10. Hekker was in the end zone when fielding the snap but calmly connected on a 21 yard strike to Rodney McLeod, a safety who was a gunner on the punt team. That play came late in the second quarter.

With just less than 5 minutes to patriotsofficialnflauthentic.com/TOM_BRADY_SUPER_BOWL_JERSEY.html play in the fourth quarter, Hekker struck again, throwing a 19 yard completion to Lance Kendricks on fourth and 8 from the St. Louis 33. That play kept what looked like a game winning TD drive alive with Sam Bradford throwing a 2 yard TD pass to Austin Pettis for a 24 21 lead with 1:09 to play. But a last second field goal sent the game into overtime tied 24 24, and that seahawksauthenticofficialshop.com/MARSHAWN_LYNCH_SUPER_BOWL_JERSEY.html turned out to be the final score.

The Rams have had no such luck so far this season when it comes to trick plays on special teams. Before the end around that never was, the Rams tried a fake punt in Game 3 at Dallas.

But Hekker had to double pump because of pressure from the Cowboys' perennial Pro Bowl pass rusher, DeMarcus Ware. As a result, Hekker threw high and incomplete to Bailey, who was open over the middle running downfield from his gunner position.

Against San Francisco, even had Bailey received the ball from Giordano, apparently the play wouldn't have counted anyway.

"There was a flag on the play," Fisher said. "We were called for illegal formation, so I was concerned about that because it wasn't an illegal formation."

Fisher said he never got an explanation for the flag but still wants one.

"I asked the official what the penalty was," Fisher said. "He said, 'I've got illegal formation, but it will be declined.' And I asked what was wrong with the formation and he said, 'It will be declined.' Something to that effect."
